There is no 4 cup mark on my instapot! Only 1/2 and 2/3 full. This is very confusing! Did not turn out well for me. Had to dump it all out

    Instant Pot says:

You are correct, the newer stainless steel inner pot versions do not have those markings. It is 5 cups water in comparison. (I’ve updated the recipe to give that information) Thank you for the feedback.

Hi Princeshops – yes you need a cUlture starter to make any yogurt. Typically use shop bought plain yogurt first time. Next and future times use what you made yourself to start the next batch. Hope that helps Those new to making yogurt

Does the yogurt mixture go into cups into the instant pot and get covered with the water? If so, wouldn’t water get into the mixture?

What should the temperature be to boil?
What temperature when you cool to add ingredience?

  6. Madeline
    Madeline says:

The temperature should reach 180 degrees and when cooling 115 -100 degrees when adding starter liquids.
    Hope this helps .

These are horrile instructions! It must get to 180 F, then you cool it to about 110 before adding the starter. Why not give the IP instructions..

I really dont see the point of calling this a yogurt recipe when you add vanilla yogurt to milk? That seems kind of pointless than to just go out and buy yogurt…lol unless im missing something this is useless.

  9. Instant Pot
    Instant Pot says:

    Hi Bayne33,

The yogurt is used for the bacteria to culture the milk to make yogurt. If you do not add a type of yogurt starter, you will not be able to make yogurt.

According to these direction, 5 cups of water are put into the Instant Pot and then the lid is closed? I am confused. How am I making yogurt if there is only water in the Instant Pot?

It seems to me that several steps and points are missing from this recipe.

I do not understand how this has such a high rating.

“Manual” Program is not used in this recipe. Manual and Pressure Cook are the same program just renamed.

    Hi akcarley,

This recipe calls for using 4 heat proof cups which are placed in the inner pot filled with 5 cups of water.

The recipe is written correctly and it has been updated, if your seeing the previous versions your app may not have updated and it is best to reinstall.

it is for making yogurt in the Lux without a yogurt program. It also makes the yogurt in 4 separate heat proof containers called cups in the recipe. You do not mix the milk with the water. The water is only used to maintain and distribute the heat to surround the 4 heat proof containers. The image shows what the author used to make the yogurt in.

I make yogurt all the time and still find this recipe confusing and just plain wrong! NEVER put water in with yogurt unless you want a very runny mess!

  17. Instant Pot
    Instant Pot says:

    Hi franceswartnaby,

The water isn’t mixed in with the yogurt. The yogurt mixture is poured into 4 individual heatproof cups and then placed into the Instant Pot Pressure Cooker. The water is used to maintain the heat.

I dont understand why you would use yogurt to make yogurt. Isn’t there a recipe to actually make it from stratch?

  19. Instant Pot
    Instant Pot says:

This recipe makes it from scratch. The yogurt is used as a starter and is easy to find unlike yogurt starter.

It is used for the bacteria in it to make yogurt.

  20. Instant Pot
    Instant Pot says:

Yes and it has to have live active cultures. You need yogurt making bacteria.

  21. Instant Pot
    Instant Pot says:

The actual cooking time is short to heat up the mixture. The rest is passive time waiting for the yogurt to culture

  22. Instant Pot
    Instant Pot says:

You have to use a measuring cup if your inner pot doesn’t have the markings mentioned.

  23. Instant Pot
    Instant Pot says:

Depends on the size of the cups and you do not want the water getting into the mixture. You may have to use a steam rack but you want the water surrounding the cups. the large amount of water is used to maintain and hold the heat over 10 hours

  24. Instant Pot
    Instant Pot says:

This is a great recipe is for the lux which doesn’t have a yogurt program. This is standard yogurt making practice to first pasteurize then let it cool to not kill the bacteria you will be adding in. We recommend learning about yogurt making before attempting to ensure you are successful.

  25. Instant Pot
    Instant Pot says:

You do not add the water to the milk mixture. You place heat proof cups containing the milk mixture into the water. The cups should be sitting in the instant pot wit water surrounding them but not entering them.

  26. Instant Pot

In the Instant Pot , add 5 cups water. Place the 4 heat proof cups into the inner pot. Then close the lid and choose “Keep Warm” function for 15 minutes.

Probably a dumb question, but I’m new!

Is it ok for the milk to curdle when boiling it? Has done it twice now. I am using whole milk.

  28. Instant Pot
    Instant Pot says:

    Hi Dbreese,

This recipe is if you have our lux model. If you have any other models we have an easier recipe.

It shouldn’t curdle or boil. The recipe needs a thermometer to ensure you heat up to and not over 180 F.

Curdling happens when heating milk too quickly, even if it never comes to a boil, can also curdle it. Instead, heat the milk gently over medium or low heat.

  29. Instant Pot
    Instant Pot says:

We have an easier recipe if you have a yogurt button. This is a work around recipe for those who only have the Lux model.

Look up cold start as it is the easiest way to make yogurt.
