Yummy and simple enough for kids. BUT. It needs more broth. Maybe a total of 2 cups would’ve done it. I also think it works better to put the chicken in first, after spraying the pot, so that it stays more moist.

  2. Ironweaver
    Ironweaver says:

Simple enough to throw together when you’ve a migraine. Followed suggestion to add more broth, worked well.

  3. UnderPressure
    UnderPressure says:

Works well with the extra broth suggestion. Just so you know, although it is quite tasty, it comes out looking like prison slop.

  4. Charris289
    Charris289 says:

I like this recipe because it’s easy. I added minced onions, cayenne pepper and hot curry powder. I also added the extra broth but thought it was a little too moist. I substituted chicken breast for drumsticks and cooked it for 20 minutes instead of 10. It was actually quite tasty!!!

Just got my Instant Pot and used the app to see if I could make anything right away. Came across this recipe pretty quickly and saw i had everything needed to make it.
This recipe really is super easy and quick, best thing was my family loved it! Big hit in our house and will be making again and again!

Sooooo easy and delicious!! Had to cook for an extra couple mins because the rice wasn’t to our liking! Tastes sooo good though!!

  7. Sloancpa

Rice was not cooked completly. Bottom of pot had burnt rice. Seems like recipie needed more broth. First meal with the pot. Followed directions.

  8. Sakat38
    Sakat38 says:

I didn’t follow directions entirely. I layered and it came out great. Water, chicken, rice, (i did broccoli and cheese soup), and frozen broccoli. Did not stir until it was completed.
Husband said it turned out bland so next time ill try broth and see if that adds flavor. I enjoyed it. Added garlic powder and shake cheese in my own bowl and it was even better! Probably would have been amazing with some extra shredded cheese!

  9. lllaurena
    lllaurena says:

Im confused. It says 35 minutes to cook, but the recipe says 10 minutes.
And what setting is it? Pressure Cook? Poultry? Rice?

  10. lllaurena
    lllaurena says:

    Ok, figured it all out.
Rice turned out perfectly and the meal was delicious.
I used 2 cups of broth and added a bit of butter.

  11. berrygee
    berrygee says:

I made this recipe again. The first time, I agree it needed more broth and it also left some rice stuck to the bottom. This time around, I used olive oil to coat the instapot insert instead of spraying it. Put chicken down first, then broccoli, rice and added 2 cups of broth. Also added mushrooms and didn’t stir until after it finished cooking. This was by far the BEST way to cook this recipe!

  12. Todddkelly@yahoo.com
    Todddkelly@yahoo.com says:

Apparently the trick to avoid “burn” is to really coat the bottom with non stick spray or oil of some kind.

    First real meal with IP

    Changed based on recommendation:

32 oz Chix Broth (1 box)
    16 oz Broccoli Flowerets
40 oz bag of chic thigs (cut up)
3 cups rice (I used calrose)
    1 tsp salt
    1/2 tsp pepper
    1/4 stick butter
2 tbsp Season-all (to season chix)
    1/4 cup olive oil

Cut up the chix, put in a bag with olive oil and season-all, let sit a few mins.

Spray and oil bottom and sides of IP.

Pour broth, salt and pepper into IP, add chix then rice then broccoli.

Cook on high pressure, rele add cheese.

So i just made this and it turned out great!!! I did change some things up as well. I used 2 1/2 cups of broth and i added garlic and onions as well, i also season the chicken before. Did not have any issues with burning or rice not being done.

Super easy. Added 5 minutes on and rice perfect. Used brown rice.
Funny thing, my son didnt complain about brocolli cooking until I vented it. And then he said, “whoa, that thing really makes brocolli smell like a fart….”
    Ha! Boys.

  20. LynnsPot
    LynnsPot says:

My first recipe in 8qt IP. Upped recipe to 6persons. Did not burn, rice was overcooked, turned to green mush when was stirred in. Tasted bland, needed more cheese.

  21. eegoodman
    eegoodman says:

Made this tonight! It was very good. It was also my first time to use my new IP. I did take into account all of the comments. So I added onion and garlic and sauteed first. Then added rice, broth, chicken, and broccoli. Changed the setting to Pressure Cook for 10 min. It took it awhile to get to the temperature because it said ‘ON’ for the longest time then once the desired temp was reached it started the 10 min countdown. Otherwise, very tasty and everyone at my house liked it!

This was delicious! I browned onion, garlic and chicken first, seasoned it with lemmon pepper. Used jasmine rice! Really good!

  24. Susie Hoard
    Susie Hoard says:

My first IP experience, glad for all the suggestions! I seasoned the chicken with sage, thyme, garlic salt, & pepper, then sauteed onions & garlic with the chicken. I added 2 cups of broth with the rice & broccoli. I didn’t mix it up & the rice was still hard after 10 minutes. I put it back on for 5 minutes, & it burnt a little on the bottom. So, next time I won’t layer, I’ll mix it up. It ended up to be a very tasty dish!

I just made this for dinner, and it was delicious! Per other comments, I used more chicken broth (about 3 cups) and I added extra seasoning (more salt & pepper, plus garlic and onion powders). I also added a tablespoon of sour cream and parmesan cheese. Even before the sour cream, it was surprisingly creamy! And the rice was cooked perfectly.

I cut 3 boneless skinless chicken breast into 1 inch cubes covered them lightly with olive oil and sprinkled Seasonal All on top of them. I also used three cups of chicken broth. It was a tiny bit thin when I took the lid off but it was the perfect consistency once we dished it and it cooled off enough to eat. Next time I’m going to try seasoning it with lemon pepper and see how it comes out and maybe add a little bit of onion too.

  31. ErectionFrog
    ErectionFrog says:

Learned the hard way it can take a while for the pot to come up to pressure. For sure need to season the chicken somewhat but otherwise delicious.

I added 3 cups of the chicken broth, it was a little thin when I took the lid off but by the time it cooled it was a perfect consistency. I used chicken breast instead of thighs but still cut them into 1-inch cubes.I also put a little olive oil on the chicken and seasoned it with Season All before putting it in the ip. Next time I’m going to try adding some sauteed onions and seasoning the chicken with lemon pepper seasoning. It was a delicious meal, quick and easy. My family loved it!

We got the burn message about 7 minutes into the pressure increasing. We released the pressure and added more liquid and stirred everything together. After that we had no more trouble with it sticking or getting a burn message.

  37. lilyfield78

It burned before coming up to pressure. I added extra seasoning and it was still a bland, mushy, glob of yuck. If I could leave no stars I would.

  38. LJMR7
    LJMR7 says:

Excellent dish (OK, it may not win any presentation awards but my family loved it nonetheless).

I cubed 4 chicken breasts and marinated them in olive oil and McCormicks Perfect Pinch Italian seasoning – for a few hours. I also used brown rice instead of white and added a tad more rice and brocolli then called for, simply because of the extra chicken. I used 2 3/4 cups of chix broth.

I cooked it for 23 minutes then stirred in cheese and a little sour cream. Done!

  39. Bmd3trout

Turned out amazing!! I changed the amount of broth to 2 cups, the rice to 1 1/4 cup, and the cheese to 2 cups. My hubby had seconds!!

  44. lesan
    lesan says:

I also had to end up using 2 cups of broth because I kept getting the “burn” message. I also ended up using the low pressure setting, so it finally started the countdown to cooking! Others’s suggestions on using different spices was helpful. Poultry seasoning plus a can of cream of mushroom soup helped with the flavor. Didn’t look appetizing but it was really good!

  46. Suzerfayce
    Suzerfayce says:

The main page says 35 minutes cook time. Then the actual recipe says pressure cook on high 10 minutes. We followed the recipe and ten minutes was not enough and the dish not turn out. I might try it again disregaed the instructions but use the same ingredients.

  47. Beachcrazy633
    Beachcrazy633 says:

First meal in our IP and it was really good. I did go off of other people’s comments and sauteed a dice onion and some fresh garlic. I also seasoned my cubed chicken beforehand as well. The broccoli did turn to mush afterwards and it did resemble baby food, as my husband would say, but the overall taste was really good.

  48. Brehborn
    Brehborn says:

Used 1 1/4 cup of broth with 4 oz of cream of chicken as people stated there wasn’t much taste. And of course added more than 4oz of cheese.

  50. LauraShifflette
    LauraShifflette says:

Good comfort food. I added some turmeric to make the rice a lovely yellow the second time I made it. More visually appealing, I think. Avoid stirring too much when adding the cheese after everything is cooked. Otherwise it will turn into a big mushy blob.

  51. LauraShifflette
    LauraShifflette says:

Could also use a little more flavor. It’s a lttle bland if you follow the recipe exactly. Next time I’ll try some onion and garlic per the recommendations of other reviewers. That should be a big improvement!

    Sassymom47 says:

  53. Jim Patty Siler
    Jim Patty Siler says:

I used homemade bone broth and then added half a cup of quinoa and a half a cup of brown rice. I think next time i’ll use the powdered chicken bouillon instead of the salt just to add a bit of a flavor pop and I like the idea of the garlic and onion next time. Fam loved it!

  54. Tberry
    Tberry says:

I was so impressed with how fast this came together! I kinda felt like this was a base recipe that needed to be added to. I added a little over 2 cups liquid, 1 cup roughly cut mushrooms, cumin, red pepper flakes, chili powder, diced onion and chopped garlic. It was yummy!

Cooked 10 mins and released pressure as directed. Poured in cheese and stirred… chicken was raw!!! Set for 10 more minutes, now the burn indicator light is on. Second failed recipe from this site. Very frustrating. Can’t understand the love for the IP!

  57. instantpotapp
    instantpotapp says:

    Mmmmmmm….chicken slop.
Pretty bland base recipe, but easy to dress up with some SPG and homemade smoked turkey broth. I also seasoned and sauted the chicken first.

  58. marybethlang@yahoo.com
    marybethlang@yahoo.com says:

Made in an 8 qt. It took forever to pre-heat and then “burn” eas on display. It also released the pressure on its own. It never even showed the minutes. I opened it up, and yep the bottom was burned. Looked ay instructions for Instant Pot. It says you only put in 1.5 cups broth. Really needed 3 cups!

  59. McRose
    McRose says:

Note to self – READ the reviews first! Was my first attempt at IP, got burnt message, tried to repair based on recommebdatjons. Still got burnt message! Tomorrow’s another day!

  60. McRose
    McRose says:

Ive just checked the user manual. No less than 18 oz of liquid should be used when pressure cooking with the ip. This recipe called for 1 1/2 c broth (that’s 12 oz). No wonder we were all getting the burnt message!

  61. Ashleylamraoui
    Ashleylamraoui says:

32 ounces of chicken broth and a cup and three fourths of jasmine rice. Also, about 2 chopped cloves of garlic. 1 cup of amerocan cheese.
Same everything else… maybe slightly more salt and pepper.
    Pretty darn good!

  62. Sklokow23
    Sklokow23 says:

Made this for my family tonight. Make sure you add at least 1/2 cup extra of broth. Otherwise you will get BURN ALERT!!!

  63. P-Fam
    P-Fam says:

2/9/19 Chicken Broth is NOT 32 ounces as stated! 1 1/2 cups = 12 ounces! Due to the fact I was distracted while putting this recipe together…I poured in the whole carton of organic chicken broth (32 oz)…so turned out NOT like picture….but super yummy! Will make again….but next time 2 c broth (16 oz) as IP requires a minimum of 16 oz when using in pressure cook mode. Note other comments stated sticking/burn problems when they used 12 oz broth.

Followed the instructions exactly with an Instant Pot Ultra 10-in-1. Came out as excepted. Not the most tasty dish ever – but, fine in a pinch.

  67. LOhlund
    LOhlund says:

Very easy to make. Makes enough for a large container when you’re in a hurry and need lunch. The meal is Hearty for a busy day. I recommend marinating the chicken in corn starch and soy sauce if you want a little more asian flavor. Cut the salt from the recipe and use sodium free chicken broth if you marinate the chicken.

  68. Bart3193
    Bart3193 says:

Husband liked it but is going to save a little and put his cajun seasoning on it. After reading reviews, I added 2 1/2 cups of broth. It made it a little runny but ok. Also I added thyme, garlic salt, and Italian seasoning as well as chopped onion and garlic. We used Muenster cheese.

  69. EatToLive

Dear God, this was abysmal. A textural disaster so offensive evem cheese couldn’t save it. My toddler wouldn’t even eat it.

  70. Lindsey Todd

Terrible mush. The burn icon kept appearing. Chicken was rubbery and over cooked while the rice was super mushy. Bottom of pan was totally burnt.

  72. Cindy Denson
    Cindy Denson says:

After reading the reviews, we decided to cook our rice on stovetop and add after the cheese. It was sorta bland. I would probably add mushrooms or something to spruce it up.

  73. Snoozelite
    Snoozelite says:

First time trying this. I read reviews first, so I decided to alter the recipe a little. My changes were the following, I cubed 2 large chicken breasts. I used 2 cups better than chicken bouillon, 1 1/4 cups white rice. I added 1 bag frozen chopped broccoli (12 ounces), 1 tablespoon minced garlic, 1/4 of an onion chopped. I did not saute the onions and garlic first. I did spray pot with cooking spray. Cooked at high pressure for 12 minutes. After quick release, it did look like it was going to be runny, but after stirring in cheese it thickened right up. The broccoli did not completely break down. Flavors were good, chicken cooked perfect. I will make this again.

  74. KevinR
    KevinR says:

Followed the instruction. Burned the bottom of the pot insert. If i make it again i will increase the chicken broth. All in all it was ok but a little bland.

  75. Warrenw597
    Warrenw597 says:

Need at least 2 cups of chicken broth – still got the burn notice. I added 12 ounces of sliced baby bella mushrooms and 6 cloves of minced garlic – it was a bit “mushy” but had great flavor – next time I’ll probably add a bit more garlic. . .

  76. Allen33
    Allen33 says:

Delicious! No changes required but use trivets if you have them to avoid burning chicken. Start with adding broth, rice and spices to pot; Add first trivet and layer with chicken; add a veggie trivet on top of chicken with broccoli (if you have one).

  79. Mrod1997
    Mrod1997 says:

I am not sure if I missed a step or didnt add enough liquid bit during the cooking process “burn” came up on my machine. It kept cooking but shen it was done the rice was a littl hard. The rest of it tastes good, will try again and see if the rice cooks better.

  80. pontillc
    pontillc says:

It’s a good recipe, with a few modifications. I read the other reviews before making this dish. Many complained that, as written, they got burn notices on their IPs. The salt and pepper called for is not enough for this recipe, hence why people think it’s bland. I used 2 cups of stock, some onion, garlic powder, light salt, and pepper to season. When it was done, I added the cheese and then seasoned to taste with salt and pepper. It was a very falvorful meal, definitely one I’d make again!

  81. AdamCreations
    AdamCreations says:

Excellent. We added some curry to the recipe but could have added more. Overall delicious. A total repeat.

  82. Instant Pot
    Instant Pot says:

Cooking spray isn’t an ingredient but it is used to prevent sticking. It is recommended to read both ingredients and instructions fully to ensure all items that are used to prepare the dish are on hand.

  83. Rschamber
    Rschamber says:

Made this today. I really like it! After reading reviews, i opted for 3 cups of broth since the manufacture’ s investigations say to always use 3 cups of liquid in my 8 quart IP. It came out perfect. No burn notice. The rice was sticky but i like it that way. I also just used the rice i had on hand not a long grain. I am sure that makes a difference. This is going into my favorite list.

  84. Standardcrayon30
    Standardcrayon30 says:

What i dont understand is it says 35 min cook time but then instructs us to cook for 10 mins where in the other 25 min. Did i miss something if anyone knows could you tell me this is only the second time using the instant pot still learning how to use this thing

  86. sjbax
    sjbax says:

My family love this and have asked for it twice this week. I season to our tastes and use chicken stock.

  87. LSladko
    LSladko says:

I used 2 cups of chicken bone broth and added another cup of water after everything was in the pot to make sure the rice was covered in the 8 quart. Then I added a cup of previously cooked rice at the end with the cheese. I tossed the chicken with poultry seasoning and fresh thyme and rosemary and added Herbes de Provence to the pot before the extra water. It tasted good, but it was a little mushy.

  88. Maburrell
    Maburrell says:

I doubled the recipe (2 cups rice; 4 cups broth; etc.) and added tons of spice (rosemary, thyme, lemon pepper, garlic…) and set for 20mins. It was bland chicken grits. Added a ton of mango garlic ghost pepper sauce to actually givebit flavor. Making each ingredient separately would be much tastier and not like bland chicken grits. Enjoy!

  89. Anniemac986
    Anniemac986 says:

  90. sid328
    sid328 says:

Great simple meal. With previous reviews saying it was somewhat bland, I added fresh garlic.

I do recommend preparing the chicken before adding it as I found the rice lost its texture and became mush.

    Would definitely make it again.

Used the trivet and it worked great. Added mushrooms and additional spices and its awesome. Like other reviews it is a but mushy but we didn’t mind. Recommend it to others to try.

    Hi Jynb78,

They are both correct. The cook time 35 minutes is overall time that can include sauteing, pressurizing, and inputted cooking time. 10 minutes is what needs to be inputed on the program and doesn’t include all the other times mentioned in the overall recipe.

Some recipes have multiple steps white multiple programs used. The cooking time being different than the individual program time is normal.

    Hi SpanishjDawg,

Three areas to watch for when making this dish. Use nonstick spray, rinse off the rice and stir in the cut up chicken. If the chicken inst steered in the weight can trap some rice against the hot bottom and start to burn.

If you are using an 8 quart you will need to add a little more water to account for the minimum liquid requirements of the 8 quart.

Easy enough – no burning issues. Broccoli was too mushy – may try with asparagus next time. Definitely bland though – will add a ton more seasonings

Sorry lost signal on last attempt. As campground host we need quick and easy meals. The local grocery store had chicken thighs on sale this weekend. I have brown rice with me,

I’m learning to like this IP!

This was very good but next time ill just cook the whole thing on the rice button on my VIVA IP because the rice cooked up to a mush. The taste was great tho!

I actually made it x3. I added poultry seasoning all over the chicken, added some granulated garlic and a little accent and pepper. So i used 4 1/2c. Chicken broth all my seasonings mentioned, a bag of frozen chicken thighs from walmart, 2 bags of frozen mini brocc. florettes and 2-2c. Shredded sharp cheddar and it filled up my 6qt IP. Shouldve only doubled it instead of tripled. Way too much!! Lol

    Hi Oldbiscuit,

This recipe requires an Instant Pot Multi-Use Pressure Cooker.

Some models will have a button called “Manual” which is the same as pressure cook.

If your model doesn’t have a steam release you may have purchased our Multicooker which is a Multi functional slow cooker.

Please take a look at our product page to know which product you have:

This was my first time using an Instapot. I have an 8qt so I doubled the recipe. I have 5 people, including 3 20 year old men so I could have tripled it! The rice was a little mushy and stuck to the bottom, but I forgot to spray the bottom. I added garlic salt and Worcestershire sauce with the cheese. Everyone liked it despite it being a little mushy. I will make again.

Rice was overcooked and starting to burn. You definitely need to add way more seasoning, it was very bland.
With adjustments it could be very good.

I used roasted chicken instead of fresh, also used precooked rice and onion soup instead of chicken stock cooking for 7 minutes instead of 10, was very good.

Y’all conplaining about a recipe being too bland and whatnot need to use your common sense when it comes to spices! If the recipe looks inadequately seasoned for your tastes, then modify it. But don’t go knocking it. For my part, I added way more spices than what was called for and I was so happy. I also added a can of cream of chicken soup because I wasn’t about to be burning my dinner. Came out super. It’s definitely comfort food and not fancy, nor super nutritious, what with all the cheese.

35 minute cook time worked well for me. I used frozen brocolli and half frozen chicken thighs and it was done. Some rice lightly burned to the bottom. Tastes ok but not sure if I’ll try it again.

    ChelsRioux says:

I read th comments before trying it, amd i wish i had listened. It burnt before even getting to build the pressure amd then i ended up having to make it on the stove. I wont be making it again. Als, if you intend on trying it, definetly add your own seasoning.

    JimHerald says:

My first recipe with my Instapot, did turn out a tad mushy but I used most of a 32oz thing of broth. Taste wise it is incredible. My roommate got a spice rack so I used a mix of oregano, paprika, red pepper flakes and a dash of some cajun spices along with zesty herd for the chicken. Added some Recipe Secret Onion for taste. Would recommend!

    dburnett625 says:

This was my 1st meal in my Instant Pot. I forgot to spray the bottom, but I did spray the sides. 10 min was the perfect time. The rice did not burn nor stick to the bottom. I knew it would be bland with those amounts of salt & pepper, but to me, that’s a meal that is heart-healthy. Since I knew that wouldn’t be enough flavor, I used sea salt & upped it to 1 tsp, added 1 tsp. celery salt, 1 tsp poultry seasoning, & 1 tsp of smoked paprika. It tasted great.

    Taylerschuetzclark says:

I used brown rice rather than white and cooked it for 15 minutes rather than 10. Next time i will try less broth, because it came out with the consistancy of a stew rather than fluffy rice. But the flavor was great, i added half a tablespoon of minsed garlic.
